The Adult Education Department of the Seminole Nation strives to assist interested tribal members with obtaining their GED. The primary purpose of the program is to provide adult tribal members with the materials and tutoring services to prepare to take the GED exam and obtain their official High School Equivalency Diploma better known as the GED.

What is the GED?

Although it has been referred to as Graduate Equivalency Degree or General Educational Diploma, GED traditionally stands for General Educational Development Test.

Once a person has graduated from high school, he or she will receive a diploma. A diploma is simply a document that states a person has completed all the required courses necessary to graduate. However, there are times in which a student may be close to finishing and getting a diploma, but he or she isn’t able to finish. When that type of situation occurs, that student is able to take tests that will determine if that said student has a high school level of education. This combination of tests and scoring is what the GED system of testing is all about.

Eligibility

Age 16 and up; interested 16-17-year-olds not enrolled in public school must complete a required state of Oklahoma underage form (other states may have different underage guidelines.)
Seminole Tribal Members will need to submit a copy of CDIB & tribal membership card (front & back)
All students must submit a copy of current driver's license or state issued ID
Non-tribal Seminole Nation Adult Ed. students are eligible to enroll in online classes to obtain their high school diploma, but will be responsible for their testing fees. (members of other tribes can be assisted to contact their tribe’s education office in order to get assistance with testing fees)

Fill out the application and turn it into the Adult Education Office along with ALL required accompanying documents.

Minor’s Release Form

Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays

Morning Sessions – 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM (noon)

Afternoon Sessions – 1:00 pm until 4:00 PM

For those with a job and the above class schedule is not conducive to their needs, those students can speak with the Director to see about classes being arranged for special circumstances.

Lessons are conducted on the computer, and the classes are self–paced. Pre-tests are to be taken in order to see when an individual student is ready for each subject. There is a small test fee for the GED Ready test, which is $6.99 per student per test. Those enrolled with the Seminole Nation Adult Education Program are given vouchers to cover this cost.

GED Ready

Once the student has been deemed as “READY” then an official GED test can be scheduled for that student in that subject area.

There are four subject areas that each student must pass in order to obtain his or her GED. Those subjects are Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.

The cost for the actual TEST for each subject area per student is $41 per subject. Seminole Nation Tribal Members testing fees will be covered by the Adult Education Program, and the Adult Ed. staff can assist members of other tribes to be in contact with their education offices in order to get assistance with the cost of testing fees. All other students will be responsible for the cost of their GED tests.

The official testing center used by the Seminole Nation Adult Education Department is the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Workforce & Social Services Office. This is the closest testing facility, and they are most helpful to our students.

For those with learning disabilities there can be accommodations made through the official GED website.

Accommodations

Once a student has completed and passed all four subjects and has received the GED Diploma, he or she is required to give the Adult Education Office a copy of that diploma and the score sheets. These documents will be placed into each individual student’s file.
