Peer Support Specialist
Position: TOR Peer Support Specialist
Reports To: COPE/TOR Prevention Specialist I
Department: Seminole Nation COPE Program
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Purpose:
The Tribal Opioid Response (TOR) Peer Support Specialist will provide peer recovery support services to individuals who have diagnosed with Opioid use disorder and/or co-occurring disorder(s) and their families as part of TOR grant within the Community Opioid Prevention & Empowerment (COPE). This role will help enhance health and wellness for program participants and promote protective factors that will lead to individuals to make healthier choices for them and their families. Overall, this role will support all initiatives of this program and carry out the program’s mission, goals, and objectives in a positive and meaningful way.

Job Duties:
• Provide individualized, ongoing guidance, coaching and support
• Provide training in the use of person and community resources
• Offer encouragement in times of crisis
• Assist in performing a number of client related responsibilities including conducting assessments, leading group sessions, talking circles and facilitating intervention
• Assist in conducting youth and cultural events that will focus on strength based, protective factors that will focus on opioid and substance abuse prevention.
• Assist in the collecting of community feedback to strengthen the COPE Program Initiatives and overall Seminole Nation and surrounding tribal communities.
• Responsible for building trust with program participants
• Provide important program measures, reports, and progress to Prevention Specialist I and Program Coordinator.
• Network and build community partnerships with other tribal opioid and substance abuse programs that focus on mental health, opioid misuse and abuse prevention, treatment and recovery, and will identify and refer community members who will benefit under the TOR grant and COPE program.
• Provide support and attend community outreach events, health fairs, and conferences to provide health promotion, community awareness, and anti-opioid use messaging.
• Always maintain a healthy and safe work environment
• Assist treatment staff with developing a treatment/recovery plan based on the client’s goals and needs
• Provide bi-weekly updates that highlight program strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to the Prevention Specialist I during COPE Program staff meetings.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• All other duties as assigned.

• Experience working in tribal and youth related programs.

Work Environment:
• Work is performed in an interior/office environment.

Physical Demands:
• The TOR Peer Support Specialist may need to work outside normal business hours to meet deadlines and fulfill job requirements.
• Must have own reliable transportation and be willing to use it for work travel.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
• Knowledge of the recovery process
• High School Diploma / GED required
• College hours in Mental Health, Public Health or Social Services field highly preferred
• Must be able to aid participants during crisis and provide referrals and resources to promote healing and recovery
• Minimum 2 years in recovery
• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with ability to meet Seminole Nation liability insurance requirements and maintain eligibility for insurance.
• Must be able to pass background check; no felonies or convictions within a 7-year timeframe
• Must be able to comply with the Seminole Nation Drug Free Workplace policies
