Legal Assistant (Public Defenders Office
Position: Legal Assistant (Public Defender’s Office)
Department: Tribal Court
Reports to: Chief Public Defender
Wage Classification: Non-Exempt

Job Summary
The Legal Assistant is responsible for providing legal support to the Public Defender’s Office, providing them with support on research, data collection, legal document preparation, and other essential duties.

Essential Functions
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
• Assists with case preparation by researching laws, regulations and gathering facts.
• Prepares motions, subpoenas and other legal documents for filing.
• Perform data entry of court filings in the defender management system.
• Assists attorneys with trial preparation such as handling exhibits, taking notes and reviewing transcripts.
• Drafts and prepares pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, summary judgments, legal correspondence, and other legal documents.
• Researches and analyzes sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations.
• Organizes service of subpoenas, service of notices of deposition, and preparation of other legal documents.
• Checks citations, quotations, footnotes, and references for accuracy.
• Summarizes laws, rules, and regulations.
• Files pleadings with courts.
• Schedules, attends, and prepares attorneys for hearings, trials, meetings, interviews, appellate arguments, depositions, and docket calls.
• Reviews and performs redacting of confidential documents for filing with various courts.
• Handles confidential and sensitive material with discretion.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
• An Associate's degree in Business or related field or Paralegal Certificate, or at least four (4) years of experience in administration or the legal field required.
• Possess an understanding of the legal process, be willing to learn and take direction from our Tribal Court Judge and Court Administrator.
• Be familiar with Seminole Nation of Oklahoma Judicial Code. Possess legal research skills to assist the Court.
• Must be able to travel in or out of the state for daily or overnight training.
• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with ability to meet Seminole Nation liability insurance requirements and maintain eligibility for insurance.
• Must be able to pass background check, with no prior convictions and/or felonies.
• Must be able to comply with the Seminole Nation Drug Free Workplace policies.

• Must be analytical and creative with detailed research proficiencies.
• Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be able to grasp and interpret legal documents.
• Must be able to draft documents and correspondence related to complicated legal concepts.
• Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of legal terminology; state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; research methods and techniques; administrative and court procedures; the legislative process; and public notice requirements.
• Skill in understanding and processing information, in the use of office equipment, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.
• Ability to conduct research; to draft, prepare, and interpret legal documents; to evaluate and relate findings to cases in question; to conduct investigations; and to communicate effectively.

Physical Demands
Frequently stands, walks, talks and hears; occasionally sits for long periods while in court; uses hands to handle objects; reaches with hands and arms; specific vision requirements include close, color, distance, peripheral and the ability to adjust focus; occasionally required to lift up to twenty pounds.

Work Environment
Work is typically performed in an indoor environment with moderate noise levels.
