Court Bailiff
Position: Court Bailiff
Reports to: Chief Judge
Department: Tribal Court
Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary
The Court Bailiff is a court safety officer for the Seminole Nation Tribal Court who will be situated in the courtroom to maintain order and provide security. The Court Bailiff will be assigned to serve under the direction of the District Court Judges to ensure the safety and well-being of court personnel and citizens in the courtroom.

Essential Functions
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
1. Assists Tribal Court Security Officers with maintaining the safety of all court personnel and citizens while in the Tribal Court Center.
2. Maintains order in the courtroom during all court sessions.
3. Opens court by announcing the entrance of the Judge.
4. Enforces courtroom rules of behavior and warns people not to disturb court proceedings.
5. Provide security for all parties, including judges, plaintiffs, defendants, and juries.
6. Responsible for screening individuals entering the court to make sure there are no prohibited items being carried into the courtroom.
7. Performs daily inspections and searches of courtrooms, judicial chambers, jury rooms, restrooms and restricted areas to assure all areas are clear of weapons, drugs, contraband and explosive devices.
8. Moves court documents and evidence to and from judges, attorneys, witnesses and others as directed.
9. Collects evidence from legal parties and juries.
10. Impose all courtroom policies and procedures, keep disturbances to a minimum, and execute the Judge’s orders.
11. Exercises responsibility for security and presence of jurors during the trial period.
12. Assist Lighthorse Police with service of process when service is required.
13. Provides assistance during any emergency situation, including medical, weather, fire, etc.
14. Effective customer service skills.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and documents used in courtroom security.
2. Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing safety and security in the courtroom and the provisions of providing emergency services.
3. Knowledge of safe and lawful handling and use of firearms and defensive equipment.
4. Knowledge of defensive tactics and application of non-lethal weapons for controlling volatile situations.
5. Knowledge of usage of security equipment, courtroom procedures, and the principles and practices of building evacuation.
6. Knowledge of the confidentiality requirements of criminal justice information and criminal history record information.
7. Knowledge of adult and juvenile human behavior, cultural differences, and socioeconomic problems.
8. Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental/physical impairment.
9. Knowledge of interpersonal communication skills, including tactical communication skills.
10. Skill in self-defense and in arresting/restraining persons.
11. Skill in performing first aid and CPR techniques.
12. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
13. Ability to make good observations, recall facts, and maintain a security awareness of the courthouse facilities.
14. Ability to evaluate and respond to security problems in a swift, effective manner, and with appropriate actions.
15. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, Tribal employees, representatives from governmental agencies, the general public, and individuals who have business with the Seminole Nation Tribal Court.

Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma/GED required, Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration or closely related field preferred.
• Must be 21 years of age.
• One year of related work experience preferred.
• CLEET certified preferred but not required.
• Courtroom Security experience, or general law enforcement experience or work involving frequent contact with the public and requiring the exercise of considerable tact and diplomacy is highly desirable.
• Courtroom Security or related training from a recognized institution or police academy is desirable.
• Must be able to participate in the annual Physical Efficiency Battery
• Must be familiar with and understand the fundamentals of a court system.
• Required to attend routine and specialized training classes and seminars of law enforcement methods and techniques for a minimum of 40 hours annual in-service sessions.
• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with ability to meet Seminole Nation liability insurance requirements and maintain eligibility for insurance.
• Must be able to pass background check, with no prior convictions and/or felonies.
• Must be able to comply with the Seminole Nation Drug Free Workplace policies.

Physical Demands
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Physically able to capture and detain individuals if necessary.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
• Must be able to work long hours under stressful conditions and may be exposed to emotional clients.

Work Environment
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee normally works in a courtroom and an office environment, with long period of standing. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
• The employee may be potentially subjected to extended periods of physical and mental exertion under highly stressful conditions and must be able to remain calm and think logically.
• The employee may be subjected to rapid changes of environment from pleasant to highly dangerous and life-threatening situations and conditions.
• Work contains an element of personal, physical, and psychological risk, and an employee must be able to exercise personal restraint and control in a professional manner and exercise sound judgment independently in emergency situations.
• The employee may potentially be exposed to: infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, biological hazards, flammable substances, explosives, firearms, hostile individuals or crowds, and other adverse and/or potentially life-threatening situations.
